Open Studios are a free learning opportunity for all quilt show attendees at Houston International right on the show floor.

Added Dimension to hand reverse applique.

If you ever wanted to see artists work in real time right before your eyes, now is the time. During show hours four artists will be working simultaneously (two hours at a time) in each of the rooms, demonstrating their craft. Come by Open Studios on the show floor and be inspired by what these top-notch artists are doing.

While you are watching they give explanations so you learn tips, skills and new ideas to apply to your quilting. And you can ask questions, too.

Margaret will be demonstrating the during the times on the following topics.

  • Thurs., Nov. 3, Noon - 2 pm: Added Dimension , Create Studio. Beautify your reverse applique and wow others as you create dimensional life in your quilts. Learn how to "under-color", "over-color" and add multiple layers to see a design recede or gain height. Add some fluff to puff or embellishments. Mix your fibers, change your thread color and add the quilting to see new dimensions give life to your reverse applique creations.

  • Thurs., Nov. 3, 4 - 6 pm: Holy Mola! Multi-layered Reverse Applique, Create Studio. Molas are colorful multi-layered hand reverse applique pieces associated with the Kuna Indians. Making a mola is a playful stitching journey that encompasses technique and design. I’ll show you how using our Trace, Baste, Snip & Stitch method. Be empowered to make a mola as unique as you.

  • Fri., Nov. 4, 10 am - Noon: Not Your Grandmother’s Way - Reverse Applique the Eye of the Beholder Way!, Stitch/ Sew Studio. Reverse applique is doable, easy and fun with our easy 4-step methods for hand and machine reverse applique. Open up a world of creative possibilities. Learn how enjoyable and portable it is to lovingly stitch by hand and easier & speedier by machine. Be inspired and have some fun!

  • Fri., Nov. 4, 2 - 4 pm: Paper-Piecing - Stitching by Number, Stitch/ Sew Studio. Does paper-piecing overwhelm you? It doesn’t have to. It’s really quite forgiving. Come see this demonstration that takes you step-by-step through the process of place, stitch, trim, flip, repeat until your block is built one fabric at a time.

  • Sat., Nov. 5, Noon - 2 pm: Quit-As-You-Go, Quilt Studio. Tired of quilting a big quilt on a sit-down machine? Quilt your quilt in small blocks and then sew it together. Come learn how in this step-by-step demonstration.

  • Sat., Nov, 5: 2 - 4 pm: Now What? Quilting Reverse Applique to Reveal it’s Beauty!, Quilt Studio. You’ve gone to all the effort to stitch your design with reverse applique. Now it’s time to quilt it. But how? Come learn how to make the beauty of your reverse applique shine. Plus, gather quilting ideas for pieces that have applique and reverse applique that accent and augment the multi-dimensions you’ve stitched into your quilt.
