Ornament your Tree with Twinkling Stars of Wonder and Light

Machine reverse applique, Machine applique & Paper-piecing

Difficulty: Beginner

Make your tree sparkle with quilted ornaments that are fun to make and bust through your stash. Plus you get to learn new techniques. Ornament 1 is created with machine reverse applique. Then use the cut-outs from Ornament 1 to make the machine applique Ornament 2. Ornament 3 is paper-pieced.

All directions walk you through in clear step-by-step directions so its great for beginners, and so quick and easy to make you’ll want to make lots! Fill your tree and give them away as gifts.

Yardage makes 3 Ornaments; one of each kind. Each Ornaments 1 & 2 finish at 4 in. x 4 in. Ornament 3 finishes at 4 1/2” x 4 1/2”.

Open-toed sewing machine foot strongly recommended for making all the ornaments

Fabric for Top, Binding & Backing:

  • 1 Fat Eighth - Red - Ornament 1: Reverse Applique; Ornament 2: Applique

  • 1 Fat Quarter - Yellow - Ornament 1: Reverse Applique; Ornament 3: Paper-pieced

  • 1 Fat Eighth - Green - Ornament 2: Applique

  • 1 Fat Quarter - White - Ornament 3: Paper-pieced

  • 1 Fat Eighth - Yellow 2 - Ornament 3: Paper-pieced

Batting:

  • 2 - 4” x 4” squares, Ornament 1 & 2

  • 1- 4 1/2” x 4 1/2” square, Ornament 3

Soft Fuse (double sided, paper-backed iron-on fusible):

  • 5 - 4” x 4” squares - Ornament 1: Reverse Applique; Ornament 2: Applique

  • 2 - 4 1/2” x 4 1/2” squares - Ornament 3: Paper-pieced

  • 1 - 1 3/4” x 3” rectangle - Ornament 3": Paper-pieced

Hanging Ribbon:

  • 1 - 6” Red - Ornament 1: Reverse Applique

  • 1 - 6” Green - Ornament 2: Applique

  • 1 - 6” White - Ornament 3: Paper-pieced

Ornament 1 & 2:

  • Thread- 1 spool each of 50 wt. the same color as top/ applique fabric

  • Sewing machine needles- 75/11 or 80/12

Ornament 3:  

  • Thread- 1 spool of 50 wt. White and yellow for paper-piecing and quilting

  • Sewing Machine Needles - 90/14

  • Glue stick or spray adhesive, Perfect Piecing Foundation sheets recommended
