A little bit about the Folk School and its Teaching Model:

Grounded in the Danish Folk School tradition, we emphasize non-competitive, hands-on learning in an encouraging and supportive environment. Emphasis is placed on forming bonds through communal living and learning. Our focus is on developing skills that will lead to a higher level of craftmanship over time rather than on the final product. The Folk School motto is “Awaken, Enliven, Enlighten” and enlightenment happens in many ways. The values of the Folk School are joy, kindness, stewardship and non-competitive learning.

Reverse appliqué gives a unique, dimensional look to a quilted piece because the design is made in the background fabric...the negative space…peeking out of the top fabric!

About our Class:

A beginning level Hand stitching class. Students will learn to reverse applique and applique by hand. Students will learn about positive and negative space of these two techniques in quilting and explore their impact upon design in quilts. Students will learn the trace, baste, snip & stitch method from Eye of the Beholder.

Join the fun and be empowered! Make the whimsical flower block from Spring Rains by hand reverse appliqué and appliqué for a unique, dimensional look! The techniques you will use are the same for both appliqué and reverse appliqué. It’s just a matter of knowing where to cut to create your seam allowance. You will learn Margaret’s quick and easy steps in Eye of the Beholder’s trace, baste, snip, and stitch process to create your blocks by hand. You will get pointers on how to successfully needle-turn appliqué, giving you crisp points and graceful curves. See the dimensional magic of the Bloom blocks (8" x 8") revealed as you stitch. Learn with others and experience the fun and beauty of applique and reverse appliqué by hand.

If you want to learn a bit about this technique before the workshop, check out our Tutorials section on the website: Hand Reverse Appliqué tutorial.

See below for downloadable Workshop preparation/materials list and Pre-cutting list. It’s essential that you pre-cut as there will not be time in the workshop to do this, so this will help us make best use of our time together. All links open in a new window.
