Trace -
Lay out Petal Corner Post pattern. Find the middle of the length and width of the 5” x 5” fusible square. Crease. Open up fusible and lay on pattern with paper side up, aligning folds with the patterns hash marks. Pin to pattern. With a sharp pencil trace all black/ dark gray shapes onto the fusible. When done, remove pins.
Lay your ½” x ½” square over the Dark Gray flower center and trace. Set aside for later.
Iron –
Find the middle of the length and width of your top fabrics (1 – 5” x 5” White or Green square) for Poinsettia Block by folding. Iron or finger fold. Open up to lay flat.
Lay top fabric right side down. Lay Soft Fuse square, glue side down, onto the wrong side of top fabric. You may want to secure with pins. Iron fusible onto your fabric following your fusible material’s directions. Remember to remove your pins before you iron.
Snip -
With small, sharp scissors, carefully cut on the lines to cut out the black/ dark gray shapes on the pattern. Discard what you cut out. On the pattern piece:
White- your top material
Black/ dark gray- what you will cut out and discard
Iron –
Find the middle of the length and width of your Red background fabric (1 – 5” x 5” square). Iron or finger fold. Open up and lay flat with wrong side down.
Peel the paper off the fused top materials without tearing it. (DO NOT discard. You will use this paper, your “A” map, as a template for placement of the applique). Carefully lay glue side of fused top material of Poinsettia Block onto the right side of the Poinsettia Block’s background material. Align the middles of the length and width of both fabrics with each other. Iron fused top fabric onto the background, following your fusible material’s directions.
Machine Appliqué
Lay a piece of Yellow appliqué fabric, right side down. Place your ½” x ½” square of Soft Fuse with the Flower Center traced on it, glue side down, onto the wrong side of your appliqué fabric. Iron fusible onto your fabric following your fusible material’s directions.
Snip-
With small, sharp scissors, carefully cut on the lines of these Yellow Flower Centers.
Iron-
Place your Reverse Appliqué top of Poinsettia Block on your ironing surface with the right side up and place your “A” maps on them. Align the cut-outs in the paper with the matching shapes of the design on your Reverse Appliqué blocks. Pin the upper edges. Peel the paper off your Flower Center appliqué shapes. Place the fused Flower Center appliqué , glue side down, onto your blocks under the paper. Use the paper to help position them. Iron onto the top of your block.
Iron a Soft Fuse square onto the back of the Poinsettia Ornament. Peel the paper and iron onto one side of your batting square.
Fold your 6” hanging ribbon in half and pin to the middle of the Poinsettia.
Iron a Soft Fuse square onto wrong side of backing square. Peel paper and iron onto other side of batting, being sure to remove the pin holding the hanging ribbon in place. You now have a completely fused and layered Poinsettia ornament.
Stitch- Machine Reverse Appliqué & Machine Appliqué
Switch to your open-toed sewing machine foot. To satin stitch, select your machine’s zig-zag stitch and adjust the stitch’s width and length until you have the desired look. Or select your sewing machine’s satin or applique stitch. Thread your sewing machine with thread that matches your reverse appliqué fabric and machine reverse appliqué with a satin stitch, covering all raw edges of your top fabric. Then thread your sewing machine with thread that matches your appliqué fabric and machine appliqué with a satin stitch, covering all raw edges of your appliqué fabric.
When done, zig-zag around the edges of the ornament.
Hang on your tree and……enjoy a touch of Christmas elegance!
Optional coaster: To make a coaster you could simply leave off the hanging ribbon, or you could finish the edges with a proper quilt binding. If you want a binding you will need a 2” x 22” strip for binding for every coaster.
