QuiltFest Virtual Schoolhouse 2:

Holy Mola!

Make the Festive Bloom

Thursday, May 12, 2022 -

Noon - 6:00 pm (EST)

Holy Mola! Make the Festive Bloom Mola is a wonderfully fun and creative hand class. No machine needed.  It will be taught by Margaret Willingham at the second QuiltFest Virtual Schoolhouse hosted by Mancuso , ONLINE, May 11-14, 2022.

Mancuso Show Management is no stranger to online quilting and textile arts seminars. We've learned that many students enjoy learning new and exciting techniques from the comfort of their homes. The great strength of this platform is that both instructors and students do not have any country borders or cultural barriers to their participation from around the world.

Put on the tea and get comfortable in your PJs and slippers, and join us for another of the Virtual Schoolhouse series.

Molas are multi-layered, brightly colored reverse applique pieces most known in connection with the Kuna Indians from Panama. They are created by cutting down through the layers and stitching the upper layer onto the underneath layer by hand. We’ll look at how to think through the process from start to finish.

Everyone starts with the same pattern, but how your Mola finishes will be totally up to you and your imagination. We’ll brainstorm ideas together, but ultimately you design your mola so it will be as unique as you are. Here are two Festive Bloom Mola examples I’ve stitched just to fuel your imagination.

To make your Mola I’ll teach you our easy 4-step trace, baste, snip & stitch method for hand reverse applique that’s easy and fun. I love seeing the Mola unfold in my hands, one stitch at a time.

another version of the Festive Bloom Mola. This one has an orange background, a turquoise middle layer and a purple top fabric. The green is inserted between the layers for the leaves and appliqued on top for the leaf stems.

Molas typically have a dark top plus two bright contrasting fabrics. You’ll need 3 FQ’s of batiks and then some smaller batik squares to have on hand to play with as possibilities for leaves and accents. You’ll want to be able to see through your background batik to trace your pattern at least with a lightbox.

The required kit has your pattern, one each of the hand sewing needles you’ll need and a spool of basting thread. All other items needed are detailed on the supply list.

Holy Mola! Make the Festive Bloom Mola is a class full of creative possibilities that Margaret will be teaching on Thursday, May 12, from noon – 6 pm (EST).
